Do You Care About Titles?

I have always thought that Job titles were somewhat of a joke. Now of course if you are the CEO of the company your job title will never change however, if your like most professionals and stay in a company for any length of time chances are your job title with undergo changes as the company culture develops. A common question in social circles is “what do you do?” with so many job title changes answering such a simple question can at times be daunting!

Leaders of some small and midsize businesses have long gone by nontraditional “chief” titles. Among them is Robert Stephens, founder of Geek Squad, a 24-hour technology-services provider, who calls himself chief inspector. “Geek Squad fundamentally sees itself different from anyone else in its industry,” said Mr. Stephens, whose company was acquired by Best Buy Co. in 2002. Getting Answers to Tough Questions

You know, as I’ve said before when your really wanting to be sharp for an interview go around the net and read articles just like this and get some of those tough questions and write out your answers. Then study the answers so you’ll be ready to pop off the answer when a question is asked. It works! Good article on the subject BTW!

Keywords - SEO Your resume

I found this article interesting. Basically using keywords to help people searching the databases find your resume. You know I have done some SEO with different websites but never thought to use keywords in my resume. I think I will be publishing an article on this subject. Have you been submitting resumes and not hearing back? A piece on dice.com suggests it may not be your lack of qualifications but more of a lack of keywords.Keywords are phrases that communicate your job skills, responsibilities, and/or functions. The more you reference keywords that are contained in the recruiter’s search, the more likely you’ll get calls. Here’s some advice from dice.com:
First, be aware that keywords are best when they refer to hard skills. In other words, “network engineer” and “Help Desk agent” are likely to get more direct attention than “team player” or “multi-tasker.”
The physical location of keywords is also important. Dice says, “Providing a summary of keywords at the conclusion of your resume is an effective way to assure that your resume is selected during database searches. However, to help move you to the interviewing stage, list your keywords near the top.” Deborah Walker, a certified career coach and president of Alpha Advantage in Portland, Oregon, suggests including keywords in the top four to five inches of your resume because the recruiter won’t look beyond that when quickly reviewing a batch of candidate resumes.
And another little tip from the same article: If you’re changing careers and don’t have the relevant experience yet that would allow you to incorporate the keywords, you can include an “objective” that includes a list of skills you want to develop. That way, your resume will come up in keyword searches.

Does Your Resume Irk Hiring Manager?

This is exactly what I’ve written articles on many times. You have to make your resume easy for the hiring manager to read! That’s why I’ve always put alot of emphasas on the importance of a well presented cover letter and objective statement. By the time the hiring manager has reviewed your resume for 30 seconds 2 things should of happened.
1. Your resume should of made the next sort pile
2. Your resume is in the trash can
That’s it! It’s a make or break thing. If you pack a punch in the first paragraph of your resume with a bold objective statement that communicates who you are, what you can do and WHAT you are looking for this greatly increases your chances. Remember for a single job there could be 100’s of applicants. Out of those 100’s of applicants they’ll be narrowed to to maybe 10-20 people to interview at MOST!
So give the article a read and give your resume a good looking over!

ndianapolis, IN (PRWEB) December 13, 2007 — When applying for a job the last thing anyone wants to do is annoy the hiring manager reviewing their resume. Yet, too often, this is exactly what happens when a job seeker fails to clarify the type of position they are seeking. In fact, 30 percent of hiring managers said that resumes not tailored to a specific position are the most frequent mistakes they see when reviewing resumes, according to a 2007 Careerbuilder.com survey.“One of the worst things you can do with your resume is to try to make it work for ‘any’ job. Although it’s acceptable for you to consider a broad range of jobs, applicants who don’t show a clear idea of what they want to do impress very few employers,” says Michael Farr, author of the newly released The Quick Resume & Cover Letter Book, Fourth Edition.
Such a resume faux pas can be easily corrected through the use of a clear, well-written job objective near the beginning of the resume. This statement should make it obvious to hiring managers what type of position the job seeker is interested in and should be supported with achievements and skills throughout the resume.

You can learn what companies pride themselves on, including their products and achievements, by checking their Web sites. 6. Don’t appear desperate. Employers will be turned off if you say something like “It’s your loss if you don’t hire me.” Instead, show them, with examples of your accomplishments, why you would be an asset to their company.

Resume : A Reversal in It Outsourcing?

Polish up that Resume because according to this article from the India times companies in India are starting to hire outside of the country. I find this to be quite a suprise as just a year ago I remember reading an article about how American workers were trying to go get jobs in India but they were not allowed to work there. Does this mean that American workers quality of work in the end does stand out against other countries? Events like this sure do suggest so.

” BANGALORE: India continues to hire and train for its growing information technology industry, but a talent shortage is forcing it to look overseas.
“We’re hiring from campuses in the US and Europe where we can hire people from the local environment,” said Suresh Senapaty, Wipro Ltd CFO at a television interview during a Summit in Bangalore on Friday.
“We get them to Wipro, get them to India, get them to understand senior leadership and do the packaged induction program,” he said, adding that they go back after a two-week program.
Supplemental hiring, or hiring employees in and from America to do jobs offshored to India from the US, is becoming an option for a lot of Indian companies.
While some companies choose to let these foreign employees work from their respective home base and pay them more than their counterparts to compensate for the cost of living, others relocate them to India with hefty packages.
One of the main reasons for supplemental hiring is to have a diversified global footprint and also make customers comfortable that they are dealing with a local person who understands their needs, said Senapaty.
“We are seeing a reverse trend trickle right now of people around the world wanting to work in India,” said S Gopalakrishnan, Chief Executive of Infosys Ltd., India’s second largest software exporter that also runs an internship program for 136 students from universities abroad, including MIT and Stanford.”
That’s pretty wild. So now your Resume means something in India when just last year they wouldn’t even look at it!

Use Caution when posting your resume online

Looks like you got some people posing as companies on Monster and asking for your Social Security # and such. Be careful, if you do post your resume online DO NOT INCLUDE ANY CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION including your phone # and address. In fact you might want to use a fake last night and just let the employer know your true info when you contact them directly.

The Monster résumé database was recently the target of malicious activity that involved the illegal downloading of information such as names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses for some of our job seekers with résumés posted on Monster sites including MonsterTRAK,” Sal Iannuzzi, chairman and CEO of Monster Worldwide, said in the e-mail. A Rider student was scammed Oct. 29 after she put her résumé on an online job-posting site, according to Public Safety. A fake company claimed to be interested in her and provided a name and address. However, because of her alertness she did not follow through with the request and her identity was not compromised. Lawrence Township Police also took note of the fraudulent post. However, John LeMasney, manager of OIT-Instructional Technology, said there is no evidence that students were victims of the Monster scams in September at Rider, which offers the college division of Monster called MonsterTRAK. Yet that could be because not many people know when they are being scammed. In his statement, Iannuzzi attributes the breach in security to “phishing” e-mails, which is a term that many Internet users are not familiar with, according to LeMasney. “I would say that for every person who knows what phishing is, there are 10, 20 or 40 who don’t,” he said.

Job Listings And Being Legit

Don’t assume all those Job Listings are real. A practice I started to notice towards the end of the 1990s by recruiters was what I call resume collecting. Recruiters posting jobs on the job boards for positions that didn’t exist in the first place. You as the professional would submit your resume into a huge black hole.
I’ve made it a common practice for myself to only give my resume out when I know the job is real. If I respond to a job listing online from a recruiter I ask them directly if they are the hiring manager for the position. If they are now I asked him if they have direct contact. If they say no then I let them know I am interested in the position however, unless they can establish direct contact with the hiring manager for the position I’ll be moving along.
It’s a total waste of time to submit your resume to a recruiter who has no direct connection with the client that is actually hiring for the job. Don’t be afraid to ask and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and waiting.
